Tube baby (or test-tube baby) treatment is the non-medical name of a set of procedures to help couples with the conception of a child. It is only one of the many assisted human reproduction techniques but definitely the most effective one. In medicine literature it is called IVF, the abbreviation for In-Vitro Fertilization.

 

When is It Applied?

Not all couples are able to conceive naturally at every try and the problem, if any, can be different than what we call infertility. In general, infertility may be pronounced if the woman can’t get pregnant after at least a year of trying through natural unprotected sex. In such cases, the couple with the hope of having a baby first needs to get a medical evaluation to pinpoint the exact underlying reason and go on with the doctors’ recommendations. Genetic factors, traumas, dysfunctioning organs, unhealthy habits may make it impossible for a couple to produce babies and sometimes there is even no explainable reason.

Depending on the case, ages and health conditions of prospects, and the doctors’ findings, the couple will be offered to try less invasive options before taking an expensive and time consuming tube baby treatment. This can be fertility medication to boost egg production or medically assisted sperm placement in the uterus, which is called intrauterine insemination. When none of these primary treatments work, tube baby treatment will be the couple’s ultimate option.

• Fallopian tube damage or blockage, which can prevent the sperm or the embryo move naturally.
• Ovulation disorders, which shows itself with fewer female eggs.
• Endometriosis, which can affect the function of the ovary, uterus and tubes.
• Benign uterine fibroid tumors, which are common in middle aged women.
• Low (or impaired) sperm production, which means less chance of natural fertilization.
• Unexplained infertility, which means that there is no explanation for infertility but the woman can’t get pregnant.

Depending on the country, treatment prices vary dramatically. In US for example, a price of above 10.000 USD is spoken, while in UK it is 7000 USD on average. However, for the very same service and medical technology, you can have it for about 3000 USD in Turkey.

There is no guarantee for any particular treatment to result as hoped but talking generally, recent studies show that global live birth chances of IVF treatment are as follows:

– 25% for ages 35 to 37

– 11% for ages 40 to 42
– 5% for ages 43 to 44
– 4% for ages over 44
